Hern\u00e1ndez finally went to the moon after 11 attempts \u2013 but how he got there is why he&#8217;s the most impressive astronaut in the universe.<\/p>\n<p>The child of Mexican migrant workers in California, Hern\u00e1ndez remembers the moment he realized he wanted to go to space:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was hoeing a row of sugar beets in a field near Stockton, California, and I heard on my transistor radio that Franklin Chang-Diaz had been selected for the Astronaut Corps. I was already interested in science and engineering, but that was the moment I said, \u2018I want to fly in space.\u2019 And that\u2019s something I\u2019ve been striving for each day since then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FNowThisNews%2Fvideos%2F1382132268543560%2F&amp;show_text=0&amp;width=560\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This NowThis video details Hern\u00e1ndez\u2019s incredible journey to space, but it\u2019s the fact that he was inspired to do so by Chang-Diaz, a Costa Rican-American astronaut of Chinese descent, that really blew our minds. This is what people mean when they talk about representation and inclusion \u2013 when kids look on TV and see someone that reminds them of themselves achieving greatness, they realize that they can, too.<\/p>\n<p>Hern\u00e1ndez is so much more than a man who never gave up on reaching the stars. Seriously, he even <a href=\"http:\/\/astrojh.org\/\">founded a nonprofit<\/a> to help other kids get there. His journey that began as the child of migrant farmers is evidence that representation and inclusion really do work. We\u2019re looking at a cycle of inspiration for all of us.
