She turned this dream into her life\u2019s work honoring American workers.<\/p>\n<p>Ukeles was an OG rule-breaker in the 60\u2019s. She even got kicked out of Pratt for her controversial art. After Pratt she wrote <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.queensmuseum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Ukeles_MANIFESTO.pdf\">Manifesto for Maintenance Art 1969 <\/a>&nbsp;<\/em>which has one main philosophy: cherish the maintenance of society, not just innovation and new ideas. It was pretty directly a jab at capitalism, and during the Cold War no less.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people who were taking care and keeping the wheels of society turning were mute, and I didn&#8217;t like it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1433\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1433\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1433\" src=\"https:\/\/newsincerity.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/MierleLaderman-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"american worker\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1433\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Maintenance Art public performance. Photo: Mierle Laderman<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ukeles wasn&#8217;t afraid to raise a lil\u2019 Hell when it\u2019s called for.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Maintenance] is trying to listen to the hum of living. A feeling of being alive, breath to breath. And I know that that has to be a part of culture. Because if isn&#8217;t, then you don&#8217;t have a culture that welcomes in everybody. And, I mean everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A project she did in the late-70s, called <em>Touch Sanitation<\/em>, reflects this verve to give voice to the silenced. For part of it she visited the 59 sanitation districts of New York to shake hands with every single sanitation worker\u2014more than 8,500 of them. Why?
