Period.<\/p>\n<p>If you grew up poor you probably know the feeling well. You\u2019re standing in the lunch line at school hoping the person taking money is feeling nice, cause you got none. And not \u2018I\u2019m saving mine for after school\u2019 none, but like none, none. And you\u2019re 12, so it\u2019s not like you can just go make your own.<\/p>\n<p>So you got a plate of mystery meat and you\u2019re near the end of line. Now, depending on where you live, to curb your hunger you might have to clean the cafeteria or&nbsp;if you\u2019re really lucky, you\u2019ll be stamped on the arm with \u2018I need lunch money\u2019 and then be left to walk around and beg other kids for food.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">My friend&#8217;s son came home from school Thursday with a stamp on his arm that said &#8220;LUNCH MONEY&#8221; because his account was low.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 TECHNOprah (@juanyfbaby) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/juanyfbaby\/status\/848147899175272452\">April 1, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Man, good thing you\u2019re already brimming with self-confidence and have no acne at all. Just kidding, you\u2019re still 12.<\/p>\n<p>FINALLY, New Mexico governor (and apparent saint)&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Gov_Martinez\" data-hovercard=\"\/ajax\/hovercard\/page.php?id=121725593970&amp;extragetparams=%7B%22directed_target_id%22%3A0%7D\" data-hovercard-prefer-more-content-show=\"1\" data-hovercard-obj-id=\"121725593970\">Susana Martinez<\/a> signed a bill doing away with these practices. California and Texas have similar bills in the works\u2014we see ya! Now we\u2019re hoping some empathetic human beings in the other 47 United States do the same.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve been following us, you know that New Sincerity is about action \u2013 large and small alike \u2013 so here\u2019s our two cents on what we can do moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>First off, <em>have hope.<\/em>&nbsp;Small movements grow when we give them attention. Media is catching on \u2013 do your part to talk about it. Like, oh maybe, share this article?<\/p>\n<p>Second, <em>call your government reps<\/em> and make sure that every state gets a bill like New Mexico\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Third, if you have the means, <em>pay off overdue lunch accounts<\/em> of kids in local schools. You have no idea how big of a relief it will be for that kid. Or maybe you do.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s work towards building a country where our kids don\u2019t inherit their parents\u2019 problems and where they never, ever go hungry!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lunch shaming sucks.
