Betty Chinn\u2019s been called a \u201cphilanthropic force of nature\u201d and after we heard her story we can\u2019t say we disagree.<\/p>\n

Every day, for 3 decades, she has risen before the sun to greet her homeless neighbors in Eureka with hot coffee and donuts. In the evening, she\u2019s back again with dinner.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn a way I\u2019m healing myself,\u201d says Betty, remembering her time as a homeless child in China during the Cultural Revolution of the 60s. She sees those she helps as being quite like her and it drives her to volunteer her time and Social Security money every day.<\/p>\n

She also gives out some stern love, making sure these friends are trying their best to pull themselves back up\u2013\u2013and they love her for it. She is someone they can depend on and talk to, something that has been scarce in many of their lives. Now, Betty is opening a shelter that will give a roof to at least 14 families.<\/p>\n
