Under Tunisia&#8217;s dictator Ben Ali, radio quickly banned the song, but not before it became an anthem for the Tunisian revolution during the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2016\/08\/11\/magazine\/isis-middle-east-arab-spring-fractured-lands.html?_r=0\">Arab Spring<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One of the many faces of resistance, Mathlouthi refused to play the \u2018nice girl\u2019. She didn\u2019t want to be another \u2018world music\u2019 chic on a Putamayo record, or to get sucked into the Western pop genre. Instead, the fiery metalhead took the traditions of Tunisian music and made them her own.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We can be vulnerable and be the force of the world at the same time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"EMEL MATHLOUTHI - KELMTI HORRA - The 2015 Nobel Peace Prize Concert\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wJ79iEfus8E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>She took her art to the US where she continues to explore questions of identity and freedom \u2013 from mentoring music programs at <a href=\"http:\/\/giantstepsmusic.org\/\">Giant Steps<\/a> in SF to touring in Babylon and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>Mathlouthi\u2019s song of anger, distrust, and the realization of personal power resonates with Black Lives Matter, LGBTQ, and countless other communities fighting for their right to simply be who they are.<\/p>\n<p>For her, personally, she told The Guardian, \u201cIt\u2019s important [for me] to be out there as a creative, Tunisian, Arab woman from a Muslim culture, but completely free.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mathlouthi\u2019s art is medicine \u2013 healing hearts and freeing minds.
