That means a cleaner environment&nbsp;<em>and&nbsp;<\/em>well-paid employment. <a href=\"https:\/\/gridalternatives.org\/\">GRID Alternatives<\/a>, a California-based solar non-profit, is making sure low-income neighborhoods have access to both solar energy and the jobs they create.<\/p>\n<p>Their efforts alone have prevented \u201cthe release of 340,000 tons of greenhouse gasses over the systems\u2019 lifetimes and provid[ed] more than $110 million in energy cost savings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Through their&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gridalternatives.org\/what-we-do\/workforce-development\">Workforce Development<\/a>&nbsp;programs, GRID Alternatives makes sure their solar installation is done by folks who may otherwise not have the opportunity for such well-paying jobs\u2014solar installers earn between $20-$24 per hour starting wage. With these training programs, many of their participants go on to get full-time work in the solar sector.<\/p>\n<p>A few of their programs include one specifically for women and another for veterans wanting to start a new career in clean energy. My father told me I was not ever going to be anybody.\u201d After spending a week in jail, Sysaknoi started volunteering at GRID Alternatives which quickly turned into a six-month internship. Now, he&#8217;s a crew leader at a local solar company.<\/p>\n<p>The efforts of GRID Alternatives are well-loved across the nation, with branches in California, Washington D.C., Colorado, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey.
