{"id":4857,"date":"2017-12-29T09:05:35","date_gmt":"2017-12-29T17:05:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsincerity.us\/?p=4857"},"modified":"2023-05-20T05:24:18","modified_gmt":"2023-05-20T05:24:18","slug":"first-lutheran-trans-paster-practices-radically-inclusive-faith","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kilde.org\/new-sincerity\/first-lutheran-trans-paster-practices-radically-inclusive-faith\/","title":{"rendered":"First Lutheran Trans Pastor Practices Radically Inclusive Faith"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America began accepting openly trans pastors, Megan Rohrer was one of the first seven to become ordained.<\/p>\n<p>Because of the &#8216;religious abuse&#8217; they experienced while growing up, Rohrer was driven to study religion as a way to &#8220;vocalize what I knew in my gut was OK,&#8221; they told Cosmopolitan.&nbsp;Today, this 37-year-old pastor uses faith to bring folks together, not to divide.<\/p>\n<p>What started as a response to hate became a passion to do so much good. Rohrer is now the Executive Director of San Francisco faith-based organization <a href=\"http:\/\/sfwelcomeministry.blogspot.com\/p\/about-us.html\">&#8216;Welcome<\/a>&#8216;, which offers assistance to homeless and vulnerable folks through hospitality, arts, education, food, and referrals. They also help faith communities welcome LGBTQ folks in.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Each week, I preach about ancient stories of faithful people who were just as diverse, fabulous, and motley as we are today,&#8221; Rohrer told Broadly. &#8220;Their stories inspire me to find hope in hopeless times, having the courage to come out, act and remain authentic saves the lives of others.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4860\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4860\" style=\"width: 960px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4860 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/newsincerity.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/rohrer.jpg\" alt=\"Singers of the Street at Jane Warner Plaza\" width=\"960\" height=\"720\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4860\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Singers of the Street at Jane Warner Plaza. Photo: David-Elijah Nahmod\/Hoodline<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Rohrer also started <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SingersOfTheStreet\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Singers of the Street<\/a>\u2014a choir of homeless folks and advocates. After each rehearsal, the choir eats a free lunch together. Their CD is available on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Singing-Our-Supper-Singers-Street\/dp\/B074L85RMZ\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Amazon.&nbsp;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>They are also now the SF Police Department&#8217;s first LGTBQ chaplain, stepping in to comfort officers during tragedies, like the Ghostship warehouse fire of 2016.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If people of faith could love the fabulous diversity of their neighbors as much as they love God\u2014we would change the world,&#8221; Rohrer told Broadly.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rather than using faith to unite, I hope we will use faith to diversify. Meaning, we will be able to love ourselves enough to be vulnerable and honest without shame or fear.
