Aged out of foster care, young adults are left&nbsp;to adult homeless shelters where&nbsp;their&nbsp;age makes them&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/ariel-zwang\/in-counting-the-homeless-survival-sex_b_6663872.html\" rel=\"nofollow\">more vulnerable<\/a>&nbsp;than older adults.<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Rosenkrantz and Sam Greenberg \u2013 recent graduates of Harvard \u2013 opened <a href=\"https:\/\/www.y2yharvardsquare.org\/services-at-y2y-harvard-square\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Y2Y Harvard Square<\/a>, a student-run homeless shelter for young adults, to offer an alternative solution. Now, homeless youth ages 18 to 24 in the Boston area can count on having a safer place to&nbsp;sleep at night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYoung people don\u2019t feel safe, and often aren\u2019t, in adult shelters,\u201d said Rosenkrantz told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/harvard-homeless-youth-shelter_us_56facb12e4b014d3fe2452a4?utm_hp_ref=community-kindness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Huffington Post<\/a>. \u201cWe felt it would be wrong not to open up a space for our peers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4396\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4396\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4396\" src=\"https:\/\/newsincerity.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/y2y2.jpeg\" alt=\"Young Adults Shelter\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4396\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The shelter serves healthy dinners every night. Photo: Greg Premru<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With no application necessary, Y2Y uses a trauma-informed, gender-inclusive approach to welcoming people of all experiences into their sanctuary. Between 20-40% of homeless youth are LGBTQ and the shelter makes sure they feel safe \u2013 bunks and restrooms are gender-neutral, and staff never ask for gender identification on arrival.<\/p>\n<p>Y2Y also offers resources and support for visitors to have long-term success after their 30-day stay. Demand is always bigger than supply, so helping those who do score a bunk bed at Y2Y find long-term housing or employment is an integral part of their platform.<\/p>\n<p>The 30-person volunteer staff coordinate daily dinners, yoga classes, mental health care, and bring in professionals to coach in career readiness and legal assistance.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our goal is to meet people where they are, and support them in their goals,\u201d Rosenkrantz told Huffington Post. \u201cSome people want jobs or to go back to school or to find housing, and we have case managers working to connect them with services. Others just need to rest and recuperate from the trauma of living on the street.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4398\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4398\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4398\" src=\"https:\/\/newsincerity.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/y2y-683x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"homeless young adults shelter\" width=\"600\" height=\"899\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4398\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bunks come with a light, plug, and locker. Photo: Greg Premru<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Greenberg and Rosenkrantz also believe that exposing Harvard students to homelessness and encouraging a habit of volunteering will make them better participants in society after college.\u201cNot to be excessively crass, but this is why people at Harvard who get the privilege of studying this shit still go into fields that actively increase inequity,\u201d Greenberg told Crimson. He argues that it&#8217;s very important to volunteer.<\/p>\n<p>But Rosenkrantz emphasizes that Y2Y isn&#8217;t a flock of Harvard students with a savior complex rushing in to save the day.
