Then he stopped himself \u2013 this was the photo&nbsp;<em>everyone&nbsp;<\/em>took. Who would it actually be for? Would this really bring him joy? He didn&#8217;t take the photo and decided to do something else instead.\n\nHe brought eight stacks of books from his own collection \u2013 his favorite books, not ones headed for the thrift store \u2013 and left them in various public places around New York City. His books made appearances in Grand Central Park, the middle of a subway station and a child&#8217;s swing in Harlem.\n\nInside each book, he tucked in a note saying:&nbsp;&nbsp;\u201cTake a book. Any book. When you finish, email the artist.\u201d\n\n&nbsp;\n\n<figure id=\"attachment_4344\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4344\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4344\" src=\"https:\/\/newsincerity.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/books2.jpeg\" alt=\"The Reading Project\" width=\"600\" height=\"604\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4344\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Dan Yim for the Reading Project<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n&nbsp;\n\nMalik decided not to go back to see what had become of his book stacks.\n\n\u201cIf I stuck around or revisited the stacks then it would be very close to how we live \u2018digitally,\u2019\u201d he told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/entry\/shaheryar-malikleaves-leaves-stacks-books-new-york-city-social-network_us_56f95ef6e4b014d3fe239668?utm_hp_ref=community-kindness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Huffington Post<\/a>. \u201cNowadays we can go back and look at something we posted whenever we want. We can just hang around on social networks for hours [watching a post].\u201d\n\nHe calls this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.madebysherry.com\/readingproject\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Reading Project <\/a>and it&#8217;s been a success \u2013 he&#8217;s received over 70 emails from more than 30 countries. And since many of us are slow readers he expects to receive even more.\n\nThe underlying question of Malik&#8217;s project seems to ask: how can we make meaningful connections?\n\nMalik has three books left which he says brings him a feeling of joy rather than one of&nbsp;loss.\n\n\u201cI have given away something, but I\u2019ve never really left them. What you\u2019ve read becomes you and stays with you, and now they carry on and get extra lives,&#8221; he told the Guardian.\n\nMalik&#8217;s next destinations?
