She started the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heatherheyerfoundation.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Heather Heyer Foundation<\/a>, an organization that helps young adults who are passionate about social justice.\n\n&#8220;I turned my attention to carrying forth her message,&#8221; BRO told USA Today.&nbsp;&#8220;You don\u2019t get to silence my kid and get away with it.&nbsp;I&#8217;m going to speak even louder.&#8221;\n\nOn the anniversary of her death, Bro ignored the public upset and spent the day bringing flowers to Heyer&#8217;s grave and attended a NAACP meeting.\n\n&nbsp;\n\n<figure id=\"attachment_5800\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5800\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5800\" src=\"https:\/\/newsincerity.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/susanbro-1024x677.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"423\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5800\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Susan Bro, Heather Heyer&#8217;s mother. Photo: Shelby Lum\/RTD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n&nbsp;\n\nIt&#8217;s true \u2013 sometimes being our best activist selves means tuning out what doesn&#8217;t serve us.\n\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.splcenter.org\/\">Southern Poverty Law Center<\/a>&nbsp;published a guide that is worth referring to, called <em><a href=\"http:\/\/goo.gl\/8FvUjZ\">Ten Ways to Fight Hate: A Community Response Guide<\/a><\/em>.\n\nThere are ways to balance self-care while fighting hate (in fact, we\u2019d argue that self-care is itself a form of activism) and their guide serves up many ways to stay vigilant.\n\nBe very tactful with your activism and use it to build bridges among diverse communities and platforms.\n\n&nbsp;\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Federal judge says AZ law that shut down a Mexican-American Studies program violated students&#8217; constitutional rights <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/DaL0SkIh5m\">https:\/\/t.co\/DaL0SkIh5m<\/a><\/p>\n\u2014 SPLC (@splcenter) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/splcenter\/status\/900417365539565568\">August 23, 2017<\/a><\/blockquote>\n<script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\n&nbsp;\n\nWe\u2019re all frustrated, but think about how you can channel your anger in a constructive way. Post to church bulletin boards, expose your children to multicultural experiences (Common Sense Media has a <a href=\"http:\/\/view.commonsensemedia-email.org\/?qs=a4e6f149a4b845a0769d0214dd3382d78200df7e58f76979c77fa116b3e96478e38155a72e6db275e28db37965117d7f8e41f65a79927834c1efbd62169805c2dd6bb472a32b2044\">host of resources<\/a>&nbsp;to assist parents in just this), and stay engaged with local law enforcement and political leaders by demanding their presence in tackling hate crimes. In essence \u2013 find anything and everything that unifies our communities and celebrates our diversity.\n\n\u201cA united coalition is like Teflon. Hate can\u2019t stick there,\u201d says Chris Boucher of Pennsylvania.\n\nMake time for self reflection and be willing to address personal biases (hey, it\u2019s ok, we ALL have them.) Brokeass Stuart, an SF-based travel writer and TV host, recently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfexaminer.com\/i-am-racist\/\">published a piece<\/a> in The SF Examiner acknowledging his duty to stay engaged.\n<blockquote><em><strong>\u201cA lot of us who\u2019ve already been involved in the struggle for equality and equity feel like we\u2019re doing the best we can. But we can always do more. I can do more. You can do more. And this is the time to do it.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/blockquote>\nSelf-education and activism isn\u2019t something we need to do alone. Seek out your community for support and inspiration.
