Pretty much from the get-go this was how she lived her 83 years.\n\nBorn in 1897, her curious and happily rebellious streak first took the form of civil disobedience in her teens. She hung around the socialist and anarchist crowds in college and began writing for several left-wing publications. She took part&nbsp;in the famously non-violent suffragist Silent Sentinels protests, a two-year long vigil for women\u2019s rights, held outside the White House occupied at the time by Woodrow Wilson.\n\n&nbsp;\n\n<figure id=\"attachment_3438\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3438\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/newsincerity.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Dorothy-Day-center-WWI-protest-2-9-1917-UPI-photo-640x500.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3438\" src=\"https:\/\/newsincerity.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Dorothy-Day-center-WWI-protest-2-9-1917-UPI-photo-640x500-300x234.jpg\" alt=\"Dorothy Day\" width=\"600\" height=\"469\"><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3438\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dorothy Day (center) at WWI protest. (Photographer Unknown)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n&nbsp;\n\n&#8220;We most talk about poverty, because people insulated by their own comfort lose sight of it,&#8221; she once said.\n\nIn her late 20s, she converted to Catholicism. In collaboration with a close confidant and religious mentor, Peter Maurin, they created The Catholic Worker in 1933, a religious paper that emphasized selflessness and compassion. They called themselves \u201ca pacifist movement that combines direct aid for the poor and homeless with nonviolent direct action on their behalf.\u201d\n\nThese ideas quickly became a movement across the country \u2013&nbsp;called the Catholic Worker Movement, fittingly \u2013 many churches committing to the practice of generosity and social activism.\n\n&nbsp;\n\n<figure id=\"attachment_2952\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2952\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2952 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/newsincerity.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/catholicwork.jpg\" alt=\"Catholic Worker issue\" width=\"400\" height=\"280\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2952\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Front page of early Catholic Worker issue.
